A cup head bolt, also known as a carriage bolt or coach bolt, has a domed head and a square neck which makes the bolt self locking. It is used through an iron strengthening plate on wither side of a wooden beam, the squared part of the bolt fitting into a square hole in the ironwork. It is also common to use directly into bare timber as the square section gives enough grip to prevent rotation.
